Month: May 2014

NuBorg, new single – ‘You You’, out now

Bringing us her first full video, NuBorg (aka Norwegian songwriter Gunhild Nyborg) releases new single ‘You You’ today.

The single, the latest in a string of single releases coming out on the 15th of each month leading up to an album launch in May, is arguably her strongest yet, and certainly the one that most easily sits in the pop genre. Previous releases (see last month’s ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’) have been darker, broody, but this one has a light touch and a great sentiment.

‘You You’ is out today, with album ‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’ due in August.

Fur Cough – Bye My Myopia

Fur Cough announce the release of their debut self-titled EP, Fur Cough, via Baby Baboon Records on 4th August 2014.

To celebrate the release of their upcoming EP, Fur Cough are giving away ‘Bye My Myopia’ for free.

The London based four-piece pull on influences ranging from At the Drive-In and PJ Harvey to The Jesus Lizard and Lhasa de Sela to produce an alternative rock record that has a richness and diversity that any fledgling band would be proud of. Opening track ‘Bye My Myopia’ kicks proceedings off with a bang. Rough, emotive, layered vocals pierce through the speakers, complemented by hypnotic guitar and a memorable chorus that will swirl around your head for days. Second track ‘Lost In Rely’ evokes memories of early Nirvana and official single Peril Soaked Penny sums up Fur Cough perfectly – balls out rock and roll, complete with soaring guitars and relentless drumming, all beautifully knitted together by a killer hook.

Fur Cough were formed by brothers Aaron (Lead Vocals, Guitar) and Hayd Brown (Lead Vocals, Guitar) in April 2013. Both Aaron and Hayd act as lead vocalists and songwriters in the band which offers a uniqueness to the music that many other bands would find difficult to replicate. After searching for members who would compliment the bands style, the brothers were introduced to Karen Jones (Drums, Backing Vocals) through a friend who then recommended Debbie Ahakpo (Bass, Backing Vocals) – the final piece of the jigsaw was in place and Fur Cough were born. Wasting no time, the band immediately set about writing and recording, producing enough material to record their debut EP.

To support the release of their debut EP, Fur Cough will played a slot at the Alternative Great Escape Festival on May 10th in Brighton, will be playing Camden Rocks on May 31st and have already started to write and record new songs for another release at the end of the 2014.

Fur Cough by Fur Cough is released 4th August 2014 via Baby Baboon Records.

Acollective – ‘OTM’ (Official Video)

Unique and compelling, this is the latest single from Acollective.

Acollective grew up making music together. In their teenage years, the story started in the way that many others do – with kids making a racket in their parents’ basement. It was an open forum to vent frustration. With no real intention of ever being a full time band, in truth only ever really aspiring to exist as a community of musicians, Acollective’s formative years were spent playing not in gig venues (who books a band that doesn’t have any songs?) but springing up at their own guerilla shows on the streets on their hometown, Tel-Aviv. Crowds started forming, more and more gatherings took place and, with a hook-up in the UK, the band’s first ever real tour was put together. As they went on to storm festivals like Glastonbury, YNOT and SXSW, they never looked back.

Now, ahead of new album Pangaea (Alcopop! Records, July 7th) the band reveals the video for its first single ‘OTM’. Talking of the single, front man Idan Rabinovici comments;

“It’s a celebration of being left behind, of being insulated from the outside world but deeply affected at the same time – in a state of perpetual limbo. Nothing is more dangerous than staying put, and nothing is more heartbreaking than running away.”

‘Sliding Off the Edge of the World’ -NuBorg

‘I’m slipping way/ Losing control / Can’t see the horizon / I’m sliding off the edge of the world’

The chorus lyrics of the new single from NuBorg – a Norwegian songwriter releasing her debut album track by track, month by month – perfectly sum up the feeling of the song. Hypnotic, dreamlike and evenly paced, ‘Sliding off the Edge of the World’ gives you the feeling that you’re doing just that. Slowly, but surely, sliding away.

With repeat listens, the effect grows – the excellent production, the simple but effective arrangements, that bassline – this is beautiful music, without a doubt.
