Kite Collectors rekindle the concept album

In this age of digital singles and independent downloads, the age of the concept album seems to have been relegated to the past alongside Betamax and HD DVD. However, in their new LP ‘Clockface’, Wiltshire three piece The Kite Collectors are trying gamely to bring it back with style.

The album is about the titular character ‘Clockface’, with each of the 14 songs detailing an interaction with another character over the course of one day. It makes for a wide and varied set of styles, all based on a rock foundation but given freedom to explore other avenues based on the album’s premise.

‘Wonder’ is the eleventh track on the album, made available for streaming in an attempt to draw attention to the full album. If it’s got your vote, you can get the album now from Paisley Records.

Travelling folk artist Calming River releases ‘The Ones That We Left Behind’ EP

Still a man of relatively young age, roots song writer Calming River has seemingly already experienced enough in his life time to fuel new music for some time to come. He has travelled around the world writing songs, playing festivals and winning fans with his intimate live show, and based on the songs on new EP ‘The Ones that We Left Behind’, it’s easy to see why.

The new EP is out now, and finds the youngster on typical form. Finger picked acoustic guitar is overlaid with a vocal which is raw and imperfect but all the better for it. You get the feeling that this is an artist who writes and sings because he HAS to and not because he WANTS to. It makes for songs that immediately make it clear which emotional space they’re in, and draws the listener in.

Philip Murray Warson releases new two track EP

I’m not sure whether it counts as an EP or a double A side single, but the new release from Philip Murray Warson (labelled as an EP in his press release) contains two songs of great, whispering beauty.

The first is the haunting, echoey ‘Last of the Hunted’, which is oddly moving and really climbs under your skin on first listen. The second is ‘Following Time’, which can be found above. This is perhaps slightly less immediate than its predecessor, but has no less impact.

Summed up, both songs contain lovely vocal harmonies over minimal, acoustic musical arrangements – really beautiful work. You can hear both tracks (and buy them) on Bandcamp.

Neolektra – Immortals

Although this may be Neolektra’s first ever solo release, she is hardly new to the world of music. She has already performed as herself (Naomi Tagg) with huge artists like Elton John, Celine Dion and John Legend, and has performed for Richard Branson and Peter Gabriel. Her background is also in producing dramatic and emotional music for visuals, predominantly for advertisers. Her past clients include giants like BMW, Mercedes and Google, along with many more, so she certainly knows how to conjure emotions and capture an audience.

NEOLEKTRA was styled by Desiree Lederer who has an impressive resume and has styled some big celebrities including pop icon Rihanna, Victoria Beckham, Dannii Minogue, Scarlett Johansson (the list goes on, for a more comprehensive list go to http://www.desireelederer.com). Brands used were Issey Miyake, Nikita Karizma, Karen K Boutique, Rellik London.

From childhood Naomi has been immersed in musical variety. She grew up in Cape Town, South Africa with 5 siblings, all of whom played at least 3 instruments and a great great grandmother who played the harp for Queen Victoria! The fierce competition to learn and improve drove Naomi to excel at a young age.

She inevitably rose through the traditional ranks of classical music; playing in orchestras, learning how to assemble music professionally and eventually earning herself a scholarship to study music at the University of Cape Town. Neolektra’s real musical character came out of rebellion, however, as she decided to quit her degree before finishing. She hated the formality and structures surrounding the classical world and decided to create something fresh, something which really resonated with her own character and what she loved.

What came about in the following decade was her quest to create a new sound for the violin, to give it a new identity. Rather than stemming from any one particular inspiration, it has been an exploration of the modern violin, from jazz to rock, dance music and soundtrack. The result of which, after many years, is her album ‘Birth of a Heroine’.

Her classical music upbringing has allowed her to create an orchestrally rich album, diverse in genre and instrumentation. Her music is expansive and feels like it is exploring new parameters in traditional music classifications. Indeed, one of the aims of the song and album generally was to take the listener on a musical journey and hope that they come out the rabbit hole with a fresh perspective on music.

‘I Was Hoping I’d Run Into You’ single from Chris Hornsby

Based in London but originally from the North East of England, Chris Hornsby is a singer songwriter with influences in country, folk, acoustic music and a touch of indie-rock. A real story teller, his debut single is titled ‘I Was Hoping I’d Bump Into You’ and tells the familiar tale of a man waiting to meet the woman of his dreams – but not knowing where to look.

The song is full of energy, the strummed acoustic guitars and pacy drumming creating a sound more on the country folk side of things than the indie rock, giving this a light touch of high quality.

I’m unaware of Hornsby’s next release, but based on this opening effort, it will be one worth hearing.
